The emergence of technology has created a ripple effect in the food delivery/convenience store delivery industry in North America. It is the new “convenience economy” as the term describes the convenience of ordering food and other items from the comfort of your home. With that said, there has been a rising demand for workers in this thriving industry and lately during the pandemic.
During the last few years Aggregators have stepped in the market and have revolutionized the delivery business. They provide access to multiple restaurants through a single online portal. By logging in to the site or app, consumers can quickly compare menus, prices and reviews. Employment creation is significant in this industry as couriers and delivery people are needed to do the deed and deliver items to customers. Companies like Uber Eats, Doordash, Grubhub follow this unique system as well and that has indeed created employment in the US and Canada for lots of people who own vehicles and would like to earn some extra cash on the side.
Not only has there been a demand for services to be delivered during the lockdowns and maintaining social distancing, there has also been a rise in demand for delivery folks to get the job done. This has created employment for people who otherwise would have been unemployed due to the slowing economy. This is a win win situation during hard times when the economy bounces back from recession. Time is critical so the speed of delivery is crucial for customer satisfaction.
The delivery business has expanded recently to include grocery deliveries as well by big players like Doordash who are now delivering convenience store items as well. The employment that generates is widespread since the network reaches many major cities in the US and Canada. Also, there is logistical, marketing, sales and operational backend work that needs to be done as well which again has a ripple effect in creating more employment to run things effectively.
Since the food and convenience store delivery industry is expanding at a phenomenal rate, there is going to be more employment creation in the years to come because of course the companies would require drivers to deliver food and other items especially for orders spike on weekends.
The rise of online Food Delivery industry has provided job opportunities for people across a range of types of employment as chefs, administrative staff and that has also profited industries that make electric bicycles or food packaging. With the entry of smaller companies with contract drivers, we see more employment being created at the end of the day.
